Many homeowners either choose not to or simply don’t want to move into a new house—and that’s perfectly okay! In fact, older homes offer a charm and quality that’s hard to find in newer constructions. Homes built before 1995 often boast superior craftsmanship and materials, ensuring longevity and sturdiness. Plus, older homes come with unique character and history, adding a special touch that makes them feel truly one-of-a-kind versus all these newer cookie cutter style homes.

Embracing an older home means appreciating the rich details and stories that new builds just can’t replicate. So, why not celebrate the beauty and value of these timeless treasures? Let’s get started with 19 Ways To Make An Old Home Look New.

I purchased a 85 years young, 4 bedroom, brick colonial style home a few years ago in one of my favorite neighborhoods. From painting to adding built-ins, there are many budget-friendly projects to refresh your home. Let me share my tried and true top tips to make your older home look and feel as if it’s new all over again.

Refresh With a Fresh Coat of Paint

Painting your home is a great way to make it look new again. It’s not only affordable but also changes the feel and look of your space. This simple update can make a big difference. Those of us not living in a HOA neighborhood have the flexibility to paint our homes as we please.

Interior Paint

For a modern look, focus on your interior walls. A new paint job hides old damage and gives your rooms a new life. Choose colors that are in style or match your taste for a fresh vibe.

6 Ways To Modernize Your Kitchen

Renovating a kitchen doesn’t always mean a full makeover. Updating the cabinets can make a big difference. It adds new life to an old space and modernizes your home.

Painting Existing Cabinets

If you want to update your kitchen without spending a lot, paint your cabinets. You can pick any color to match your style. Painted cabinets can turn an old kitchen into a modern one.

I painted my kitchen cabinets white and changed out the hardware (see photos below). I actually paid someone $1200 to paint them for me which didn’t last long at all! I later found this Valspar Cabinet and Furniture paint and it not only was it easy to apply (no sanding), but my cabinets looked way better as if I they were factory made in this new shade and it was more resistant to wear and tear as well as scratches for many years and even now. I HIGHLY recommend this paint. There are several other cabinet painting kits/systems, but this one was fool-proof!

Below is the BEFORE and AFTER of my kitchen upgrade. I painted the cabinets, added brushed nickel handles and upgraded all of the lighting. I painted the cabinets myself using a fool proof cabinet paint (Valspar Cabinet & Furniture Oil Enriched Enamel in Satin Ultra White). Then, I paid someone I found on NextDoor app to add my hardware and install the lighting for less than $300. New Cabinet Hardware

Upgrading your cabinet hardware is another easy way to modernize your home. New handles and knobs can instantly refresh your cabinets. With many designs to choose from, you can match your kitchen with current trends without spending a lot. Amazon has a vast selection of modern kitchen hardware. Checkout Etsy for unique and intricate hardware.

Replacing Cabinet Doors

Replacing your cabinet doors (also known as refacing cabinets) is a great move for a kitchen update. New doors can change your kitchen’s look and feel. It is more of an investment, but ideal if your kitchen cabinet doors are in bad condition, questionable quality, or just look plain ole cheap.

Adding Backsplash To Kitchen Wall

Adding backsplash to an outdated kitchen is like giving your home a mini facelift that instantly elevates the space’s look and feel. It’s a simple yet transformative upgrade that brings a modern touch, making the kitchen appear more luxurious and up-to-date. The right backsplash can highlight the best features of your kitchen, adding depth, color, and personality. Plus, it’s a practical addition that protects your walls and makes cleaning a breeze.

Backsplash is really a small investment that not only enhances your kitchen’s aesthetic appeal but also boosts your home’s overall value, making it look and feel like a brand-new space. It’s a savvy move that shows you don’t need a complete overhaul to achieve that fresh, sophisticated vibe. So, why not give your kitchen the makeover it deserves and let your style shine through with a stunning backsplash? You can even save money doing it yourself!

Update The Kitchen Flooring

Transforming your old kitchen flooring doesn’t have to break the bank! There are plenty of affordable ways to give your space a fresh, modern look that suits any budget. Start with peel-and-stick vinyl tiles; they’re easy to install, come in various styles, and are perfect for a quick DIY project. For a more traditional feel, consider laminate flooring, which mimics the look of hardwood without the hefty price tag. If you’re feeling crafty, try painting or stenciling your existing floor for a unique, personalized touch. Even something as simple as adding stylish area rugs can instantly update the space. Remember, you don’t need to be a pro to tackle these projects—just a bit of creativity and a willingness to try something new. So go ahead, take that first step towards a beautiful kitchen floor, and watch your confidence and style soar! You’ve got this!

Kitchen Appliance Upgrades

With a little planning and savvy shopping, you can find the perfect kitchen appliance upgrades that fit any budget. Start by setting your sights on Black Friday deals; it’s the ideal time to snag high-quality appliances at a fraction of the cost. Thrifting is another fantastic option—many stores offer “like new” appliances with warranties, giving you peace of mind without the new price tag. Don’t overlook buying used appliances; pair them with a home warranty that covers appliances, and you’re protected against unexpected repairs. For a bit more flexibility, consider using no-interest credit card promos to spread out the cost. These strategies are perfect for everyone, from first-time homeowners to those looking to refresh their space without overspending. Remember, smart shopping and planning can turn your kitchen dreams into reality, no matter your budget.

Swap Outdated Lighting Fixtures

19 Ways To Make An Old Home Look New - Lani Does It - built ins

Lighting can change how a home feels. Replacing old bulbs with LED lights is a simple way to improve your home. This change boosts energy efficiency and makes rooms brighter and more welcoming.

Updating old fixtures with new ones can also make a big difference. Modern light fixtures can instantly make any space look better. This is an easy weekend project that you’ll adore for years to come.

I had old flourescent flush lighting in my kitchen ceiling. I paid someone to removed them and close up the ceiling. I replaced this old lighting with more modern recessed lighting and I added pendant lighting over my bar. You can find lots of options for lighting locally or online on Amazon, Overstock, Houzz or Wayfair.

Don’t overlook outdoor lighting! Upgrading porch or yard lights adds beauty and safety at night. Modern outdoor lights not only make your home look better, but also increase your safety and comfort in the evenings.

Mini Bathroom Makeovers

Mirror and Vanity From Wayfair

Upgrading your bathroom can be both fun and budget-friendly by focusing on new hardware, flooring, paint and decor . Replacing sink fixtures, showerheads, and faucets can make your bathroom feel modern and spa-like. I only replaced the really old hardware that looked like it had past it’s time decades ago. It was challenging finding replacement parts for some of the hardware throughout the home and I had to go to a neighborhood plumbing store in a neighborhood full old homes.

My bathroom in the photos below were the old tile, maybe even the original from 1937. Instead of removing them and starting over, I painted them and the tub with a epoxy like tub and tile that has stayed looking new now for years. Paying someone to do this can cost $350 plus per bathroom, depending on the size. I bought the tub and tile expoxy kit off Amazon and did it myself. I’ll have to do a seperate post on how easy that is, however, I’ll find a good Youtube tutorial and post it below so that you can see for yourself!

Next, I had the flooring replaced. It was $150 because it’s just the stick on faux wood vinyl flooring. I probably could’ve done this myself as well, but it was nice having two bathrooms with new flooring for $300 including the planking, however, the bathrooms in this old house are very small.

Looking at the photos above, you’ll also see I upgraded the windows to glass block. The old windows were thin, rusting, single pane windows. Swapping out for glass block was quick, cost me $300 and contributes even more to the spa-like vibe I was aiming for.

Sink Fixtures

Changing sink fixtures can quickly update your bathroom’s look. Think about sleek, brushed nickel or matte black for a modern style. These finishes are not only stylish, but also easy to clean, resisting fingerprints and water spots.

Showerhead and Faucets

Switching out your showerhead and faucets can really change things up. A rain showerhead turns everyday showers into a treat. Add modern faucets, like waterfall or touchless ones, to boost both looks and functionality.

Vanity Upgrade

Modern Bamboo Vanity – Wayfair

I also upgraded my vanity. The one in the bathroom was just extra raggedy and an eyesore. I found a beautiful inexpensive vanity on Wayfair. I also removed the flush square mirror and replaced it with a round medicine cabinet style mirror. I also added shelving to the wall and lastly, I style with spa like bathroom decor.

Bathroom Lighting And Decor

Lamps Expo – The Industrial Chic

I’m truly feeling the vibe in the look above using pendent lights as a focal point as well as the tub in this masterpiece of a design presented by Lamps Expo. The dark elements are perfectly coming through with all the natural lighting and I can only imagine the evening ambiance with the perfect amount of lighting.

The lighting should be sufficient, meaning bright and inviting, with a warm color temperature to create a spa-like atmosphere. Incorporate natural elements such as plants or wood accents to add warmth and texture to the space. The overall feel should be clean, fresh, and rejuvenating.

Enhance Your Windows with New Treatments

Zebra Blinds

Window treatments can change the look and feel of any room. By picking the right modern blinds and shades, and updated curtains and drapes, you can boost the look and save energy at home.

Modern Blinds and Shades

Modern blinds and shades come in many styles and functions for any home. You can find motorized blinds for easy use and cellular shades for great insulation. These treatments add comfort and style to your space. They mix functionality with fashion well.

  • Motorized Blinds
  • Cellular Shades
  • Roman Shades
  • Roller Shades
  • Zebra Blinds

Updated Curtains and Drapes

Updated curtains and drapes add color, texture, and elegance to rooms. You can choose from sheer curtains for a sleek look or heavy drapes for a luxurious feel. Pick fabrics and patterns that match your décor for a stylish finish.

  • Sheer Curtains
  • Heavy Drapes
  • Patterned Fabrics
  • Custom Designs

These ideas can help you transform your windows. Don’t overlook how new treatments can change your home’s look inside and out. With modern blinds, shades, curtains, and drapes, your windows can be the stylish and efficient highlight of your home.

Install Built-In Bookshelves

Installing built-in shelving is a fantastic way to blend functionality with style in an old home, and it’s easier than you might think! You can either start from scratch with some basic tools and a bit of DIY spirit or purchase ready-made shelves that fit your space. Built-ins are perfect for maximizing every inch of your home, turning unused walls into practical storage solutions that declutter and organize. Not only do they provide extra space, but they also add a modern touch, seamlessly blending with your home’s character while updating its look. Whether you’re displaying cherished keepsakes, organizing books, or creating a sleek entertainment center, built-in shelving is a smart upgrade that makes your home feel both spacious and contemporary. So, roll up your sleeves, grab your tools or shop for the perfect shelves, and watch your space transform with this stylish and practical addition!

Benefits of Built-In Storage

Built-in bookshelves are a smart way to use space well. They make any room look better by adding both style and function. Here are some key benefits:

  • Customizable Design: You can design them to fit your room’s style.
  • Increased Property Value: They can make your home worth more.
  • Space Efficiency: They use wall space that’s often wasted.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: They become a beautiful feature in any room.

DIY vs Professional Installation

Choosing between doing it yourself or hiring a pro is important. Each choice has its good and bad points:

  • DIY Installation: Great for those who know carpentry and want to save money. You get to control the design but might struggle to match professional quality.
  • Professional Installation: Offers expert work and quick results. It costs more but guarantees top-notch quality and may come with a warranty.

These home renovation tips should motivate you to think about built-in bookshelves for your next project. Whether you decide to do it yourself or hire a pro, the outcome can be both beautiful and useful.

Create Custom Storage Solutions

Creating custom storage solutions can change your home for the better. With smart organization, you can use every inch of your space well. Here are some home improvement projects and home makeover ideas to get you started.

Under-Stair Storage

Don’t forget about the space under your staircase for storage. You can customize it with cabinets, drawers, or a mini library. This spot is great for storing shoes, coats, designing and creating a DIY wine cellar or just freeing up other parts of your home.

My old home has storage under-neath the basement stairs. It doesn’t have lighting and the basement is just creepy. It’s still a good space for storing things away and out of site, thus, less clutter.

19 Ways To Make An Old Home Look New

Multi-Functional Seating with Storage

Picture having seats that also store things. Benches with hidden spots are great for keeping toys, books, and small items out of sight. These seats can go in foyers, living rooms, or bedrooms, making your home look neat and stylish. If you have the space, you can go with a custom bay window seating area like this one below.

Overhead Storage Solutions

Using overhead storage can make the most of your space and cut down on clutter. For instance, systems like those from Fleximounts are perfect for storing seasonal items, extra belongings, or sports gear. You can put overhead storage in the garage, attic, or laundry room for a tidy space.

By using these home makeover ideas and home improvement projects, you can make your living space more functional and organized. Custom storage solutions help keep everything in its place, making your home feel peaceful.

Install Crown Molding and Update Trim

Installing crown molding and updating trim is a great way to make an old home look new. This simple update adds elegant lines and charming details. It can really change the look of a room.

An old home with outdated trim and molding can be transformed into a modern home by replacing the trim with sleek and contemporary crown molding. The new molding should have clean lines and a bold presence, adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to the home’s interior.

Pre-painting crown molding before installation makes the process easier. It ensures your space looks fresh and unified. The type of material you choose is also important.

You can shop for crown moulding at your local Lowe’s or similar store. There is also an array of it being sold online by Amazon, uDecor, Etsy, Houzz and Wayfair are just a handful of them.

Wood is a classic choice that adds warmth to any room. You can stain or paint it to fit your decor. For areas that get wet, like bathrooms and kitchens, PVC molding is a good option. It’s durable and looks great.

Plaster and foam crown moulding is convenient and less expensive for adding detailed designs to your home. It gives a unique look that stands out. Other materials like MDF fiberboard, rubber, are also available with each of their individual benefits.

My 1937 Old Home Makeover

19 Ways To Make An Old Home Look New - Lani Does It - home decor styling

Making an old home look new can be rewarding and may also increase its value. To achieve this, focus on both cosmetic and functional updates. Here’s how I updated my old two family flat home to look new with simple changes:

Starting with the upper flat, I removed the old carpet throughout the entire unit shown in the photos below. I also removed the old kitchen cabinets and old flooring. This 1937 brick colonial 2 family flat still had a lot of it’s original fixtures going back over 80 years. However, my goal was to keep the original valuable charm character that could be modernized or still functional such as the original wood flooring in one unit. The kitchen cabinets absolutely had to go because they had about 30 layers of plain white paint.

I began by refreshing all of the plain white walls with a fresh coat of paint. Modern, neutral colors can make a big difference and I couldn’t go wrong with Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. Agreeable Gray is actually also known as Greige because of its grayish and beige tone.

Changing outdated lighting fixtures was another big step. Adding pendant lights, chandeliers, or LED fixtures can instantly update an old home.

For the lower unit, I decided to paint the fireplace two tones to match the walls. I went with Sherwin Williiams paints in Urban Putty for the walls, Windsor Greige for the fireplace and Alabaster (white) for all the white trim.

Next, I updated the kitchen. New cabinet doors and modern handles can change the look. If new cabinets aren’t possible, painting the old ones in trendy colors can also work well.

Improving window treatments was another key move. Swapping old plastic blinds for 2 inch faux wood blinds, and zebra blinds along with floor length drapes brightened rooms and refreshed their look.

Built-ins and unusual nooks, often come with older homes and add character and function. If your space doesn’t have any built ins, you could try professional installation or DIY your own following one of the many tutorials on Youtube.

Bathrooms were also a focus for improvement. New sink fixtures and showerheads made the space feel modern. These small changes can make a big impact.

Custom storage solutions are ideal too when it’s a small older home. Upgrades like under-stair storage and multi-functional seating increase space and modernize the home.

Flooring

I left the original hardwood floors as is in one unit. The other unit’s carpet was removed and stained with a really dark mahogany floor stain and then finished off with a satin poly. The floors look black, but it’s just multiple layers of mahogany stain.

Home Decor

19 Ways To Make An Old Home Look New - Lani Does It - thrifted office space

I love both the modern and vintage home decor, hence the name Modvinatage Charm which is what I named these two properties inside a 2 family flat. It helped a whole lot thrifting as many pieces of home decor as possible. Thrifting a lot of my home decor, allowed my budget to go much further. Read exactly how much I paid to thrift almost all of my home decor at these two properties. Can you guess which items I thrifted in the above photo?

Modern home decor can breathe new life into an older home, instantly updating its appearance with fresh, clean lines and contemporary finishes. By incorporating sleek furniture, minimalist accessories, and a neutral color palette, you can create a timeless and sophisticated look. The contrast between modern elements and the home’s original architecture adds a unique, stylish charm that feels both new and classic.

With these budget friendly strategies, I was able to make my home feel both timeless and modern.

Conclusion

Turning an old home into a modern space is possible with careful upgrades and renovations.

Whether you do it yourself or hire pros, every step gets you closer to a renewed home. From small changes to big renovations, every effort helps you to appreciate and enjoy your space while possibly increasing the value of the home along the way.
