Follow these easy steps for cleaning and caring for faux flowers and extending the lifespan of artificial landscaping.
Cleaning and Preserving Faux Flowers for Longevity
It’s important to clean your artificial flowers and plants regularly. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away dust or debris. Don’t use harsh chemicals or water, as they can harm the materials. For tough dirt, use a faux flower cleaner to clean without damage.
To make your artificial landscape last longer, store your faux flowers and plants in a cool, dry place during off-seasons. Keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and moisture. This keeps their colors bright and textures real for many years. SunGuard or a UV protectant spray such as Krylon’s brand will prevent fading, peeling and stains. This spray is similar the same spray used to protect your outdoor patio furniture. You can also use Krylon-Ultra UV Floral Protectant which will protect your silk and dried flowers from damage caused by damaging UV light rays and it can be used on both indoor and outdoor faux plants. I personally used Scotchgard Outdoor Sun & Water Shield for my faux garden project this year, because I already had several bottles this season and it has a water repellent.
Depending on your weather conditions, you may want to reapply your fabric protection again at a later time. By following these artificial plant maintenance tips, your artificial flower landscape will stay beautiful and easy to care for. My Outdoor Artificial Flower Pots And Front Yard Landscaping
Faux Gardening For Beginners – Lani Does It
I am all for keeping it simple this year when it comes to my landscaping and I am even more OVER my plants dying every year from freezing temperatures just to spend $100’s of dollars every year to replace them. I’m basically renting plants when you think about it!
This year, I’m just adding a small to medium size artificial plants and floral bouquets to each pot. This is going to be less work, and over time much less money while the beauty is extended over a much longer period of time.
My current landscaping out front is sunken garden style or setup (aka in-ground container gardening) planters consists of a total of 8 in-ground planters that I am making arrangements for. I have 3 other tiny in-ground planters on the opposite side of my home as well. I am purchasing all of my artificial or faux flowers and plants from Temu, Dollar Tree, Pop Shelf and Michaels.
I ordered the 20 piece bundle of fern bouquets shown below from Temu for $10.70. These were my choice because of the awesome reviews and they are advertised as UV protection. I figured I would put minimum 2 into each in-ground planter and leave one row of planters with more ferns. The stems were on the skinny side to me so I thought adding the
I also got 3 sets of these 4 piece flower bouquets in yellow from Temu, so a total of 12 which totals to $13.74. These also have awesome reviews, built-in UV protection and the added greenery will help to make my flowers seem fuller with less, therefore, less money spent. You will never pay that for real plants!
My mailbox is also a brick planter. I picked up 4 faux geranium bushels on clearance at Michaels for $20 or $4.99 each. Nothing a beats a pop of color for stunning and inviting curb appeal.
Planting faux flowers is the easiest and quickest way to get stunning curb appeal. Once you purchase your flowers, you can lay them out and plan exactly where they are going to go and how you want to plant them, whether that is directly into the ground or potted. I actually did both and also a combination of both.
When planting your faux plants or flowers in pots, you can choose from placing into dirt, with or without floral foam and then topping with dirt, sand, seashells, mulch or rocks. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain and the ground or landscaping will flood, then I would advise to use rocks inside in-ground containers instead of directly into dirt. If flooding is no concern, then you can also put your bushels directly into the ground as shown in this DIY faux garden Youtube video.
To plant faux flowers inside pots above or below the ground, follow the steps below, using dirt, sand, or rocks and if you want, you can top with mulch or seashells once finished. You could even top your rocks with dirt as well if you’re going with rocks. The rocks above cost around $7 or less per bag. These can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, gardening or landscaping stores. I’ve also seen free rocks and other gardening supplies on FB Marketplace and Craigslist.
Step 1
I’m using deep 14 inch pots, so I’m adding pea pebbles 1/3 full or 1/2 full for weight and drainage.
Step 2
Center your flowers attached to the foam discs inside your pot. (Later adding more smaller flowers)
Step 3
Add medium or small weighted rocks or pond pebbles on top and around the foam disc until covered and secure enough resist the strongest windiest day. You could also do this order or perbbles and rocks in reverse.
Step 4 (Style it up real cute to make your neighbors envy and in wonder)

Most of my faux plants and florals come with built-in UV protection, however, I still treated most of them with Scotchgard and since we are in hurricane season and it’s raining a lot, I’ll probably treat them again in a few weeks once the rain slows down.
Added Ferns + Grass Shrub Directly Into The Ground
Learn From My Hurricane Destroyed Faux Gardening Experience 🙁
Take a lesson from my book of faux gardening if you live below sea level and just go ahead and invest in some weighted rocks for your pots. Below are photos from my faux garden landscaping not even 5 days later! The eye of Hurricane Beryl swooped in and destroyed everything that was in pots and most directly in the ground. I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!
Unfortunately, in Houston, there is no where for the water to go. The ground is made of clay, so the pots were filled with water and the dirt became water. I’m so glad I used the floral foam, because it kept everything together and I just needed to find a way to plant them again with some weight to sit on top of the foam.
Everything is back to normal now even though it’s still windy and rainy every day and it’s still hurricane season. Follow the instructions above using rocks and you’ll be fine too. 2 bags of pebbles, 4 bags of rocks and topped off the bagged rocks with larger landscaping rocks which I hand picked at the landscaping supply lot.

Choosing the Right Artificial Plants for Your Climate
When picking artificial plants and flowers for your outdoor space, think about your local climate and environment. If you live in a hot, dry area or a cold, snowy place, choose plants that can handle the weather. This way, your artificial garden will look great all year.
Considerations for Hot and Cold Regions
If you’re in a sunny, hot area, look for artificial plants that can stand up to the sun and heat. They shouldn’t fade or fall apart easily. For cold places, pick plants that can take freezing temperatures, snow, and ice.
Choosing weather-resistant faux flora and selecting artificial plants for climate is important for outdoor artificial landscaping for different environments. With the right plants, you can have a beautiful garden without the work or seasonal worries of real plants.

What It Cost Me For Faux Gardening Plants & Supplies
I spent a total of $95 and some change to complete my entire front yard’s beautiful faux landscaping which also included floral foam (I specifically went with white floral foam discs). The floral foam is optional, but it helps to shape the artificial plants styling.
$95 may sound like a lot, but I completed 2 large spaces, on Medium and 2 Small. The bonus is that I’m DONE and I’ll have beauty all year long for several years. I’ll go out to spray the fabric flowers with Scotchguard after a lot of rain, but that’s it!

While I am still doing just a little gardening in the back of my home this year, it’s just refreshing to know I’m good with the front of my home for quite awhile or until I’m just ready to change things up.
