So you wanna makeover your guest room, but not trying to spend all of your hard earned coins? Iโve been wanting to do the same thing for a few years actually and the day has come where I am now motivated to do so. So what had happened wasโฆmy daughter relocated to Texas, so I gave her my entire guest bedroom set and now itโs an empty cold room.
This is what my bedroom set looks like now in the photo below. Itโs actually still sold today at IKEA (Malm bedroom set), but Iโve had it since 2009 and was ready for something new and in a completely different style.

In this post, Boho Glam Bliss: Budget Guest Bedroom Transformation For Under $1000, Iโll be sharing the steps I took to afford my guest room makeover, during a time where Iโm trying to save every dime and within a short period of time. Check out the steps below on how to get your own guest room on a budget and regardless of your decor style of choice.
Planning and Budgeting For Your Guest Room Makeover
1. Set a Budget: Determine how much youโre willing to spend. This will help guide your choices and track your spending. I set a budget for the essentials and another budget for the final touches.
2. Make a List: List all the essentials you need for your makeover while keeping your design in mind, such as a bed, mattress, linens, storage, paint/wallpaper and lighting. Save the accessory decorations for the final touches. Accessories such as wall art, artificial plants, rugs and trinkets are important, but not a requirement.
Smart Shopping On A Budget
3. Coupons and Sales: Use coupons, wait for sales, and shop during clearance events.
4. Multi-Store Comparison: Compare prices at different stores, both online and offline, to ensure youโre getting the best deal. FB Marketplace is my go to for both new and second-hand finds.
Bedroom Furniture On A Budget
5. Make sure you have the proper measurements before bringing any bedroom furniture home.
6. Second-Hand Finds: Visit thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales, staged home auctions or online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for budget-friendly furniture. I advise to be mindful of fleas and bedbugs when buying some second hand furniture.
Sidenote: You may be thinking that Facebook Marketplace has better things to offer in my city than they do in yours, but I have actually done this twice before in Detroit, MI starting from nothing at all in the entire home. I wrote about it here on how I thrifted to completely furnish two, 2 bedroom apartments in less than 6 weeks detailing exactly what it cost me. My point is, this can be done anywhere and it may be worth venturing out 30-45 minutes to save hundreds or thousands of dollars.
7. Try a convenient and affordable mattress in the box. These mattresses are easily transported and can fit in the backseat of your car or inside the trunk. The lifespan is up tp 6 years so itโs a great starter mattress and you can always upgrade later. I will discuss mattress in the box more later in this post, because itโs what I purchased this time around.
8. DIY Projects: Consider DIY furniture projects. For example, a simple wooden pallet bed frame or refurbished old furniture can be cost-effective and unique.
9. Multipurpose Furniture: Use furniture that serves multiple purposes, like a sofa bed, trundle bed, or an ottoman with storage. Iโll be discussing my trundle bed later on in this post.
Quality Bedding On A Budget
10. Affordable Bedding: Look for deals at discount stores or online sales for quality bedding at a lower price. I purchased my sheet sets from Walmart and my comforter sets from Amazon for a bargain.
11. Layering: Use layers to make the bed look luxurious. A simple, inexpensive duvet cover can be dressed up with colorful throws, accent pillows and cushions. You can also use older/imperfect comforters as duvet inserts.
12. Adding Accent Pillows: Cover old pillows with new pillow covers. They come in a variety of shades and patterns and most importantly, theyโre very affordable.
13. Invest in a quality mattress protector and pillow protectors (not cheap plastic noisy protectors..read the reviews). Your guests will appreciate this extra step and this will preserve the life of your pillows and mattress.
Bedroom Storage On A Budget
14. Creative Solutions: Use baskets, wall-mounted shelves, or under-bed storage to keep the room tidy without spending a lot.
16. Closet Organizers: If the room has a closet, use inexpensive organizers or dividers to maximize space. Check out my blog post on 11 TIPS FOR ADDING MORE STORAGE TO YOUR SMALL CLOSET
Guest Bedroom Lighting
17. Layered Lighting: Use a combination of floor lamps, table lamps, and string lights to create a cozy atmosphere.
18. DIY Light Fixtures: Get creative with DIY light fixtures using materials like mason jars or inexpensive lampshades.
Guest Bedroom Final Touches
18. Rugs: Add a statement or vintage area rug to make the room feel cozy. Look for sales or second-hand options.
19. Curtains: Use affordable curtains to add color and texture. Lightweight, sheer curtains can make the room feel airy.
20. Personal Touches: Add personal touches like books, a welcome basket with toiletries, and a few magazines or brochures about local attractions.
How I Designed My Budget Boho Glam Bliss: Thrifted Guest Room Transformation
Starting from a clean slate and using the most of the tips mentioned above, here is how I implemented some of the steps during my Boho Glam Bliss: Budget Guest Bedroom Transformation For Under $1000.
I am setting a budget of $850. I have a completely empty room. I never realized how chilly that room was until it was completely empty!
The $850 budget is for all ESSENTIALS first, which for me included: a full/twin trundle daybed, dresser, mirrored desk, night stand, mattresses, rug, comforters, and chandelier (replacing old ceiling fan).
For my accessories or final touches, I am setting a budget of $150. The essentials and final touches total is $1000 or less for my guest room makeover (Iโm hoping less). Iโll be keeping in mind the Boho Glam style Iโm aiming for when shoppping for everything.
Creating Boho Modern Glam Decor Style On A Budget
Creating a boho glam bedroom on a budget can be both enjoyable and fulfilling, especially when Iโll be focusing on thrifted items. Iโll be shopping at auctions and online marketplaces such as Facebook for key boho glam pieces like vintage style rugs, ornate or metallic mirrors, and glam lighting fixtures. Will also be keeping an eye out for items with rich textures, bold patterns, and metallic accents, which are all hallmarks of the boho glam style. Iโll bring my entire vision together by mix and matching different elements to create a layered, yet cohesive look. Iโm excited, and I hope you are too, so LETโS GO!
My $850 Guest Bedroom Budget Essentials Cost (New and Thrifted)
After evaulating my space available, I found my full size daybed with a twin trundle bed on Amazon. It came in a beautiful charcoal gray tufted upholster design with chrome nailheads. I went for a trundle daybed because it allows multiple guests to comfortably occupy a space and it serves as both a bed and a sofa. I paid $369.99 for the bed and assembled it by all by myself! The top part of the daybed is full size and the lower part that pulls out is a twin size bed.
I thrifted my dresser, rug, television, mattresses (new on Marketplace), mirrored desk and side table. Here are a few photos of the items.
So I have my trundle daybed for $370 , a dresser for $30 off FB Marketplace to serve as storage for guests, and a designer rug which I absolutely love for $35. Iโm going to decorate my guestroom using my favorite colors in this rug which are yellow/mustard, hot pink, navy blue, black, orange and gray. This rug is definitely a treasure find. I looked it up and couldnโt find it in the USA, but found it in Australia for $399. Facebook Marketplace can be a gold mine. I feel very lucky and blessed when my passion for decorating leads me to the perfect finds!
I purchased both my mirror desk below on FB Marketplace for $50 and the white Oslari Painted Accent Table from Opalhouse for ONLY $10! My plan is to paint the night stand a popping color! If you like this mirrored desk, just Google โmirrored deskโ and checkout Facebook Marketplace. Iโve seen at least 4 for sale since Iโve started my boho glam guestroom makeover.
Mirrored Desk Details
If you canโt find a mirrored desk on FB Marketplace, check OfferUp, 5 Miles App, Craigslist or make room in your budget to purchase new. Itโs definitely a statement piece. This specific desk is also sold on Amazon for $129 as of today. Itโs the model 413372 Convenience Concepts Gold Coast Desk 42โณ Console Table with 2 Drawers for Storage in Living Room, Office, Den, 42 x 15 x 30 inches, Silver/Mirror. Convenience Concepts has superb quality products and customer service so I highly recommend shopping their products, but there are lots of other mirrored desks on Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock.
In my Before photo, youโll notice I did not have my television mounted. This time, Iโll be mounting the television over the dresser, because Iโll be going from 2.5 dressers to one. I recently saw a girl on Youtube mounting a television by herself in minutes so Iโve accepted the challenge and will be mounting my own, versus paying someone to do it for me.
For my daybed and trundle, I am buying NEW mattresses. Thank God for FB Marketplace again because I found my full size 10 inch Zinus mattress brand new in a box on Marketplace for $80 at an outlet and the twin size sold by another seller for $40. Buying mattresses in a box is so convenient and yes, they are really actual mattresses and are guaranteed to last 7-10 years! Theyโre also much more comfortable than I anticipated.
I am definitely going to need matching comforter sets for my new trundle daybed. I went with this Lightweight Quilt Reversible Modern Style Bedspread Coverlet in a full and twin size. Full size set is $23.95 and the Twin set is $21.95, totaling
Sheet sets are very affordable at Walmart. The full size and twin size high quality brushed microfiber soft sheet set is less than $25 together. I looked for the gray set just like this one, but it wasnโt available near me. So I got this white floral set. The twin set is $9.44 and the full set is $14.94, totaling $24.38 before taxes.
I found a really nice chrome crystal fandelier light fixture to replace the old walnut ceiling fan. My fandelier cost me less than $80 after an flash coupon discount on Bed Bath & Beyond formerly Overstock.
Total Cost For Essentials
So this completes my essentials for my guest bedroom makeover. All items were thrifted except the trundle daybed, mattress, comforters, sheets, paint, and crystal fandelier. The mattresses were new in the box, but sold on a thrifting platform. My budget for the essential items was $850 and I spent $789! Yaayeeyayee! Woohoo!
- Full Daybed with Twin Size Trundle (Amazon, new) $370
- Zinus Mattresses (Both Twin and Full in Box, FB Marketplace new) $120
- Dresser (FB Marketplace) $30
- Rug (FB Marketplace) $35
- Mirrored Desk (FB Marketplace) $50
- Side Table/Nightstand (FB Marketplace) $10
- Chrome Crystal Fandelier (Bed Bath & Beyond, new with coupon) $80
- Comforter Sets (Amazon) $46
- Sheet Sets (Walmart) $24.00
- Spray paint (Rustoleum Navy Blue Gloss and, spray primer and water-based Gloss Black) $24
I was able to stick to my budget by aiming to thrift for my essential items as much as possible and Iโll also be painting the dresser and the side table. It is going to be like having new pieces of furniture in the end. My chrome crystal fandelier savings came from shopping competitors prices who were offering a similar style and also using a coupon code.
DIY Dresser and Side Table Before And After Makeover
Spending only $30 on a good condition dresser with working drawers and smoothe surface is a awesome deal on a solid dresser. This project only required spray primer, a quart of latex paint, and updated hardware if prefered. This project can also be done quicker using 100% spray paint with primer included.
I already had two boxes of gold and marble knobs from my other properties Iโve never used so decided to repaint the dresser in a glossy black using Rustoleum spray primer first and also water-based Rustoleum black gloss paint using a roller and change out the knobs. The screw on the knobs were too long so I had to cut them to make it work.
I also used two left over backplates I had left over from my Tahitian Treat Armoire project I posted about a while back, so I used these on only the top two drawers.
I purchased these marble knobs/drawer pulls from Home Goods a while back, but I do remember the entire set of 10 cost less than $20. Home Goods, Marshalls, and TJ Max often have sets of unique drawer pulls. Etsy and Amazon would be my online Go-To for unique affordable drawer pulls. Mercari and Poshmark are apps where you can find unique drawer pulls being sold at sometimes negotiable prices.
I couldnโt wait to paint my $10 Oslari Accent Table from Opalhouse using Rustoleum Navy Blue spray paint in the gloss sheen. It turned out so gorgeous with just two coats.
I kept the orignal hardware and lined the drawer with this lotus contact paper I found on Amazon for $7. This contact paper was easy to apply using a blade and scissors and one roll is more than enough.
Guest Bedroom $150 Final Touches Budget Details
Now that I have my essentials just under my budget of $850, I can now move forward with with my final touches. I set a budget of $150 for just a few final touches, so that my entire guest room transformation will be at or below $1000 total. I also have the $61 left over from my essentials budget, leaving me with $211 for my final touches. Final touches are actually the fun part for me, so there probably wonโt be anything left over! ๐
$211 isnโt that much money with everything being so inflated nowadays, so Iโll STILL be creatively shopping for the best lowest price without sacraficing quality. Since Iโll be placing the daybed in the middle of the room against the back wall, I thought there would be enough space on one side to place a full-length arched gold floor/wall mirror which would be noticed as soon as anyone enters the room.
After checking out my local stores, Amzazon, and online stores, I found the best price for my full-length arched gold mirror at Temu for $39. This arched gold mirror is freestanding, however can also be mounted on the wall. Itโs going to take about 7 days or so to receive my mirror. In the meantime, Iโll be shopping for stunning wall art to go above the bed.
While shopping for my wall art I stumbled on these beautiful gold metal mandala lotus wall art. I thought wow, this will define the theme of my room. Unfortunately, it was small and almost $90 after taxes. That puts me too close to my budget, soooโฆ. I will continue to look for something preferably closer to $50 or less.
During my relentless mission to find another beautful gold lotus wall art decor for around $50 led me to find this 3 peice gold lotus metal wall decor shown below at Amazon. It is PERFECT and comes in multipe sizes! I ordered it in size 43 inches by 22 inches for $53.99. I absolutely love it and it makes a perfect focal point.
When my lotus art wall decor arrived, I didnโt like the muted shade of gold, therefore I painted it using Rustoleum metallic gold paint I already had from previous projects. This will look much better sharing the same wall as the gold mirror I ordered from Temu and it will compliment this space providing a boho glam focal point.
Prior to hanging the wall art, I decided to use some leftover paint in the color chimney smoke to paint an accent wall behind the bed. I did a tutorial on transforming a bench last year where I painted the legs in chimney smoke. The paint chimney smoke color is a midnight blue black to me and it will actually compliment the color pallete in this bedroom and the gold metal lotus art will pop even more with a darker background. Valspar describes Chimney Smoke as โA deep and dark charcoal gray with a slight blue undertoneโ. I purchased the SW Ovations line a couple years ago for maximum coverage.
Now, you may not have any paint left over, but you can still stay within your budget by seeking out paint options for less than $20 in the Oops section at Lowes, Home Depot, or similar stores and you may find left over cheap or free paint on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp app, or Nextdoor app.
Earlier I shared a mirrored desk I scored on FB Marketplace. To preserve space, I decided on getting a stool for the desk. Iโll still have the chair that is in the bedroom before this makeover alongside the mirrored desk, but a navy blue pop of color would compliment my space and the desk area. Youโll see! ๐
I found this velvet navy blue storage ottoman stool on FB Marketplace, new in the box, and for only $30 cash to use at the desk. Itโs the exact same color as the painted side table. As of today, Amazon is selling this storage stool in a few color options for $34.99. I also saw SHEIN has it for even less, but their shipping waiting time may be slower and shipping may not be free.
After buying the velvet navy blue storage ottoman/stool and my gold metal lotus wall art, my budget is now at $127 remaining for my final touches . I already have lots of accent pillows from my previous guest bedroom set. So, all Iโll need to change up the color and styles are new accent pillow covers to go over my existing pillows. Amazon sells a variety of pillow covers starting at $6.99 which includes a set of two.
18ร18 navy blue velvet pillow covers are $9.99 for two Amazon so I purchase one set. So now Iโm at $117 remaining! Whewww, so close!
Iโm also got another inexpensive piece of wall art from Ross. I found this gold metal mandala like wall art design to go above my mirrored desk for only $17.99. Ross always has great deals. They are similar to Burlington or TJ Max, but with a larger selection. If you can find a few locations, even within a hour, it will be worth it. I am now at $109 for my final touches budget!
Believe it or not, I found 4 pillow covers for $7 at a local auction spot, a faux fig plant for $17 at AFW, and a corner rattan bookshelf to paint black for $20 on FB Marketplace. If you donโt know, now you know! I BE ON IT when it comes to finding good deals! ๐
This faux fig plant is priced just right and was so easy to order online for merchandise pickup. Itโs 30 inches high, and I already have a pot for it. I plan to put it right next to the gold arched mirror.
I could not pass up this wicker corner shelving unit, especially for $20. Wicker and rattan furniture design will fit seamlessly into my boho glam theme by adding a natural, textured element that complements the eclectic and luxurious aspects of the style. Wicker textures bring warmth and an organic feel to a space, balancing the more opulent features like metallic accents and plush fabrics. Iโm looking forward to this piece providing a grounded, earthy touch that enhances my boho glam aesthetic.
I am now at $90 left for my final touches. I will be spending this on candles, crystals, sage, and a couple books from Five Below. I already have lots of faux succulents from the Dollar Tree which I purchased a while back to make a succulent wreath.
Two hours laterโฆ.LOL Okay, so I found the perfect rattan chair for $20 on FB Marketplace and two yellow patterned ottomans for $15! I get treasure fever when on Facebook Marketplace and I donโt know what Iโm going to do with myself once Iโm done with this project! ๐
Okay, so now Iโm at $60 remaining for my final touches budget.
So lets get to itemizing my total cost for my Final touches.
Total Cost For Final Touches
My budget for the final touch items is $150, however, I had $26 left over from my essentials budget providing me with $176 to splurge on:
- Gold Metal 3 Piece Lotus Wall Art (Amazon, new) $53
- Gold Arched Full Length Mirror (Temu, new) $39
- Navy Blue Velvet Storage Ottoman/Stool (FB Marketplace, new) $30
- Navy Blue Velvet Pillow Covers Set (Amazon, new) $9.99
- Mustard Pillows (Nellis Auction, returned new) $4
- Pink Pillows (Nellis Auction, new) $3
- Faux Fig Plant (AFW, new) $17
- Rattan Bookshelf (FB Marketplace, used) $20
- Gold Boho Mandala Metal Wall Art (Ross, new) $18
- Yellow patterned ottomans (FB Marketplace, like new) $15
- Black heavy rattan chair (FB Marketplace, used) $20
- Lotus Corner Shelves (Temu, new) $19
- Girl heart hand planter (Temu, new) $7
I spent a total of $142, leaving me with $34 remaining. I will definitely use it on small things along way such as another candle and a few votives.
Defining The Vision For My Guest Room Makeover And Naming The Room
My guest room does include other than the items Iโve already gotten, meaning Iโve utilized some things I already in my home I already have such as crystals, books, candles, faux planters, faux succulents, a gold buddha that Iโve had since around the pandemic and other accessories. I did buy a few small things on Amazon and Temu that Iโll share below and still within my budget.
I also decided along the way to enhance my boho glam guest room makeover with crystals, metaphysical touches, and lots of plants to create a serene and spiritually enriching vibe. Crystals, with their natural beauty and purported healing properties, add a touch of elegance and mystique to the room. I displayed them on shelves, nightstands, trays and window sills to catch the light and create a shimmering effect. Eventually, Iโll probably add a โNamasteโ decal above the window, so that guestโs will be greeted and honored as soon as they enter the room.
You probably notices all the candles in the photos. I love how candles in decorative holders not only add a warm, ambient glow but also promote a calming and peaceful and inviting space.
My Buddha statue and lotus wall decor introduces elements of tranquility and mindfulness, aligning with the boho glam styleโs emphasis on creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing space. These items not only serve as focal points, but also infuse the room with a sense of spiritual depth and cultural richness.
Finally, adding lots of faux plants brings a touch of nature and freshness without the maintenance. The greenery complements the natural textures of wicker and rattan furniture, enhancing the layered, eclectic look that defines boho glam decor. The combination of these elements results in a bedroom that is both stylish and spiritually uplifting, providing a perfect sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Iโve named my transformed guest room โLotus Moon Shineโ and I would describe the style as Zen Boho Glam because of the sacred or mystic elements. Iโm certainly glad I painted the back wall in Chimney Smoke and I am very happy with the final results. This room turned out very pretty and feels so inviting while alluring and feminine. It actually feels like an zen escape away from other parts of my my home and I hope my guests will feel the same way.
Final Finishes And Results Of My $1000 Guest Room Makeover
I actually managed to mount my 42 inch television by myself and pretty darn impressed with myself I must say! I canโt believe I paid someone $75 to mount the television in my living room. The No Stud tv mount comes in many brands and runs $20. I paid $20.74 for the Hangman no stud tv mount brand on Amazon, but I know Walmart sells them all the time too.
I was very inspired by the demonstration in this video below and itโs pretty funny. I really needed nothing but a hammer, screwdriver and a step ladder. That is it! I do know that there are television size limitations with the no stud tv mount kits out there.
I didnโt bother hiding the cords behind the wall after mounting the tv , instead I covered the cord with a DIY blinged out cable organizer.
To disguise or hide the cords from my mounted tv, I blinged out the cable organizer with gel Gorilla glue and faux acrylic gem string that matches my guest bedroom, but this also be done with pearls, rhinestones, glitter, acrylic gems or anything else that will stay glued on. It just looks better to me and costs way less than hiring someone to hide the cords inside the wall.
The black corner lotus shelves are sold on Temu and Amazon. The girl planter with heart symbol hand gesture is sold on Amazon and Temu also. Temu has lowest price right now.
Well that is all yall! Check out my carousel below for more photos. Thanks for stopping by and I hope youโve been inspired!
