Smart Plugs And Smart Outlets
Let’s kick things off with a game-changer – smart plugs! These little inexpensive wonders are like magic wands for your lighting, appliances or other gadgets. I’m talking about turning your old-school coffee maker into a smart, coffee-brewing maestro, all controlled from your phone. Kasa makes smart plugs at around $6/ a piece.
Smart outlets replace your existing outlet, making anything you plug into it independently SMART – YESSS please! Be sure to turn off your power at the circuit breaker in your home if you choose to install yourself. I did not hire a electrician to swap my outlets out, we followed the Kasa Smart Outlet DIY instructions, however, you must do what you’re comfortable with or just stick to the simple smart plugs instead.
Smart Bulbs
Gone are the days of boring, one-note lighting. With smart bulbs, you can paint your room with a rainbow of colors, set the perfect mood for movie nights, or wake up gently with a simulated sunrise. The best part? You don’t need an electrician to install them! I love controlling my lights at home when I’m away traveling so I have them both indoor and outdoor. You can also find smart bulbs with built in speakers to play your favorite tunes or control with Alexa.
Smart Thermostat
Smart thermostats are absolute favorite smart home upgrade. Get cozy while saving some serious dough on your energy bills with this easy upgrade. These genius gadgets learn your preferences and adjust the temperature accordingly. Plus, they’re a breeze to install – perfect for a weekend project!
Emerson Sensi Smart Thermostat
I installed my own Emerson Sensi Smart Thermostat in less than 30 minutes (after disconnecting the power of course). See short video preview of my installation process in the Pinterest video below. I can assure you, it was very easy. Before buying a smart thermostat, I recommend contacting your utility provider to see if you qualify for a smart thermostat rebate or a FREE smart theromstat.
Google Nest Smart Thermostats
Another smart thermostat I recommend if you have an heat only furnace is the Nest E (Google, T4000ES, Nest Thermostat E, Smart Thermostat, White) or Nest Learning Thermostat. Both thermostats works with most heat only or two wire systems and no C-Wire required.
Nest also has a Google Nest Power Connector – C Wire Adapter device that works as an alternative to a C-Wire which is connected to the furnace. Or the 24Volt Power Adapter/Transformer, C-Wire Adapter Thermostat which would need an outlet near the thermostat. To have a C-wire ran from the basement to the second floor cost me $150. An electrician off Task Rabbit or Thumbtack app can assist with installing a C Wire. You can probably DIY this yourself depending on the existing wiring mounting setup.
I have set up all 3 thermostats. They’re all easy to DIY, even the Nest Power Connector. Both Sensi and Google Nest thermostats work with Alexa.
Smart Door Locks
Say goodbye to fumbling for your keys with smart door locks. Not only are they super convenient, but they also add an extra layer of security to your home. And trust me, installing one yourself is easier than you might think! I also installed my Yale smart lock on two properties following this Youtube video below. I prefer the keyless Yale touch button versus the touch screen.
Smart Security Systems And Cameras
Keep an eye on things even when you’re not home with smart security cameras. Whether you’re checking in on your pets or keeping tabs on package deliveries, these cameras have got you covered. And the best part? No professional installation required! I have the Ring Doorbell and Blink Home Security Cameras for a couple years now and highly recommend both. To install the cameras, all you’ll need is a drill and a ladder. The cameras come with everything else and you’ll just need to figure out the perfect placement.
Smart Home Security Systems come in both professional monitoring and self-monitoring. I have the Blink Cameras with the video storage for only $80/year. Ring Home Security monitoring has 3 different packages to choose from, all are affordable and much less than ADT or Xfinity home monitoring, although peace of mind is priceless.
Ring Doorbells are great for monitoring your front door and property. Even if you live in an apartment, there are no drill options for renters. If you live inside a home, I recommend the hardwired version over the solar or battery operated.
Smart Smoke Detectors
Stay safe and sound with smart smoke detectors. These bad boys not only alert you to potential hazards, but also send notifications straight to your phone. Talk about peace of mind!
Smart Leak Detectors
Don’t let a little leak turn into a big headache. Smart leak detectors are like your home’s personal detectives, sniffing out water trouble before it has a chance to wreak havoc. And installing them is a breeze – no plumber required!
Smart Speakers
Turn up your jams and level up your home entertainment with smart speakers. Whether you’re hosting a party or just chilling on the couch, these speakers are the ultimate sidekick. Bonus points for being voice-controlled – talk about futuristic! When shopping for smart speakers, be sure to read reviews and “hours of playtime” once charged. You don’t want to get stuck with one that dies after 2 hours, ain’t nobody got time for that!
Smart Power Strips
Banish energy vampires and save some serious cash with smart power strips. These savvy strips not only protect your gadgets but also let you monitor and control your energy usage. Who knew being eco-friendly could be so easy?
Smart Sensors
Last but not least, we’ve got smart sensors. Whether you’re monitoring motion, temperature, garage door, or air quality, these little gizmos are like having a personal assistant for your home. And yes, you guessed it – they’re DIY-friendly too! Just be sure to read the reviews and compatibility product descriptions.
Smart Blinds And Shades
Let there be light (or not) with smart blinds or shades window treatments. These sleek shades not only look stylish but also give you total control over your home’s ambiance. And the best part? You guessed it – DIY installation! While they are a small investment starting at around $60 each, motarized smart blinds will instantly upgrade your space to a luxury level.
